Some of the pets who visit us here in Arena have very interesting lives so we asked Kendal’s owners could we share her adventures with other pet owners and they very kindly agreed.
Let us introduce you to Kendal….. Kendal is a 68kg, 7 year old Great Dane. She has been a patient of Arena Veterinary Hospital since she was 3 months old.
She is in great health – and why wouldn’t she be, she has a lifestyle that we are all very envious of. Her passport has been stamped more times than most of us here! Since she was only a couple of months old she has been an eager travel companion of her owners in their trusty campervan.
First Trip Abroad
Before travelling, there was a short wait to make sure the anti-rabies vaccination was effective. but once she got the go ahead, she has been unstoppable ever since.
Her first trip was to France, which included a 17 hour ferry journey. Her owners were petrified she would suffer, however, the only ones who suffered a sleepless trip were ‘Mum and Dad’.
Since that first trip she has become a seasoned traveller, with up to 3 trips a year of various durations.
Over the years she has been to Luxemburg, France, Germany, Andorra, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Sicily.
Broadening her Taste in Food
Kendal has become quite the connoisseur, that’s another name for spoilt (according to her owners!). The daily breakfast is usually croissants ordered in advance and often delivered to the door.
The order is always for 5 croissants 2 each and one for Kendal. Even though it’s not recommended for dogs, Kendal has a particular perchance for Italian ice-cream. Who could resist Italian ice-cream, certainly not her?
Another taste she has acquired is for Olives. When she finds a tree she searches around underneath and picks up olives that have dropped and chews on them. She has even been known to reach up and take them from the tree when they are within reach.
Kendal discovered Pizza on her trip to Stromboli. On this trip there were a lot of teenagers and teachers. They all ordered Pizza, and as she was the centre of attention for the day, they all saved a slice for Kendal and she ate every crumb.
These trips have led to expanding her owners appreciation for fine wines and expanding kendal’s appreciation for good water. Preferably good clean flowing river water.
If there is river water nearby, she will walk away from her bowl, no matter how fresh it is. She has tasted the Rhone, Rhine, Seine, and Dordogne, Loire Dronne Tiber and lots and lots of smaller rivers. She also had her first taste of fresh snow at the foot of the Alps.
In 2017, a 4-6 week trip to France and Italy got extended to a 3 month campervan adventure. Travelling south the weather was so lovely, the desire to turn back and head for home waned, so the camper kept going and eventually ended up in Sicily.
During that trip Kendal visited Pisa, Siena, Naples Pompeii, Sorrento, Mount Etna and Stromboli, before arriving home. On her tour of Pompeii, there were so many photos of Kendal taken by people from all corners of the world.
Kendal is a very laidback large friendly dog, who has benefited from her travels. But more to the point her owners have met and remained friends with lots of nice people from various parts of the world which they are sure they would not have met without her.
Now that her rabies vaccination is up to date again, its time to get back on the road, meeting people in Tuscany in April, then, well the world, or, Europe at least, is Kendal’s oyster.
